MY Work

UX W/Friends

I was the sole UX designer on a Agile team of two developers and a project owner. I was responsible for determining the overall design direction of the project, while collaborating with the rest of the team on ideation. Balancing Privacy and Community: Creating a sense of community while also ensuring user privacy was a significant challenge. Striking the right balance between fostering meaningful interactions and protecting user data required careful consideration of features like messaging, user profiles, and content sharing settings. User Engagement Without Like Counts: Removing like counts from posts meant finding alternative ways to encourage user engagement and interaction. Designing features that incentivize meaningful interactions, such as comments, shares, and participation in community challenges, required creative thinking to maintain user engagement without relying on traditional metrics. Algorithmic Personalization Without Echo Chambers: Developing algorithms for personalized content feeds without creating echo chambers was a complex challenge. Ensuring that users are exposed to diverse perspectives and content while still receiving recommendations tailored to their interests required continuous refinement and testing of the recommendation algorithms. Moderation and Content Quality: Maintaining a positive and inclusive community required robust moderation practices and tools to address issues such as hate speech, harassment, and inappropriate content. Implementing effective moderation systems while still fostering a sense of freedom and creativity among users demanded a proactive and adaptive approach. Building Trust and Overcoming Skepticism: Convincing users to embrace a new social media platform amidst concerns about data privacy, addiction, and online toxicity posed a significant challenge. Building trust through transparent communication, user education, and a commitment to user well-being was essential in overcoming skepticism and attracting early adopters. Scaling While Preserving Community Atmosphere: As the user base grew, maintaining the intimate and community-oriented atmosphere of W/Friends became increasingly challenging. Scaling the platform while preserving the sense of connection and belonging among users required careful planning and strategic implementation of features to facilitate meaningful interactions at scale. Addressing these challenges required a combination of user research, iterative design, and a deep understanding of the underlying motivations and needs of the W/Friends community. Through continuous iteration and adaptation, the W/Friends team was able to overcome these challenges and create a social media platform that prioritizes authenticity, creativity, and community. The problem to be solved by W/Friends is the negative impact of traditional social media platforms on users' mental health and well-being. Mainstream social media platforms often foster a culture of comparison, validation-seeking, and anxiety through features like like counts, follower counts, and curated feeds. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy, loneliness, and addiction among users. W/Friends seeks to address this problem by providing a platform where users can connect authentically, express themselves creatively, and engage with a supportive community without the pressure of chasing likes or followers. By removing metrics like like counts, prioritizing genuine interaction, and fostering a sense of belonging, W/Friends aims to create a positive and inclusive online environment where users can truly be themselves without fear of judgment or validation-seeking behavior. From the case study and UX design and development process of W/Friends, several key learnings emerged: User-Centric Design is Paramount: Prioritizing the needs and well-being of users is essential in creating a successful social media platform. Understanding users' motivations, behaviors, and pain points through extensive research and user testing informed the design decisions and feature prioritization of W/Friends. Authenticity Drives Engagement: The emphasis on authenticity and genuine connection resonated strongly with users. Removing like counts and fostering a supportive community environment encouraged users to express themselves authentically and engage with content that resonated with them on a deeper level. Community Moderation is Vital: Effective moderation practices are crucial in maintaining a positive and inclusive community atmosphere. Implementing robust moderation tools and practices helped address issues such as hate speech, harassment, and inappropriate content, ensuring that W/Friends remains a safe and welcoming space for all users. Iterative Development Yields Results: Iterative design and development allowed the W/Friends team to adapt and evolve the platform based on user feedback and changing needs. Regular updates and feature enhancements based on user input helped drive user engagement and satisfaction over time. Balancing Privacy and Engagement: Striking the right balance between fostering community engagement and protecting user privacy was a continuous challenge. Implementing features that encourage meaningful interactions while respecting user boundaries and data privacy concerns required careful consideration and transparency. Education and Communication are Key: Building trust and overcoming skepticism around a new social media platform requires proactive communication and user education. Transparently communicating the platform's values, privacy practices, and commitment to user well-being helped build trust and attract early adopters to W/Friends. Overall, the case study and UX design and development process of W/Friends highlighted the importance of prioritizing authenticity, community, and user well-being in creating a social media platform that offers a more positive and fulfilling user experience.
